In the search for cures to diseases today, research is more and more placing the search light on natural therapeutic substances that hold the potential of a reduced or no side-effects for humans, animals and the environment The World Health Organization (WHO) has been in the front line in encouraging the use of safe and accessible medicinal plants to maintain optimum health and treat diseases.

In some African communities, the leaves of the African Bitter leaf are juiced and well diluted and taken as dietary supplements on a regular basis. Water, as well as alcohol extracts of the African Bitter leaf can be used as dietary supplements or as treatments.
